Homemade Christmas Gifts

Dare to DIY
This week's challenge from Kim? Dare to Give Homemade Christmas Gifts. Boy, oh boy, do I have the bases covered on this one! Unfortunately, I cannot share what I am giving because they haven't yet been given. However, I do have a few ideas up my sleeve. And for those of you who don't think that you can make these on your own, be sure to check out my Etsy shop where you can order any and all of the items I am featuring today.

This first gift is perfect for the girly-girl on your list. You know, the one who loves princesses and all things pink.
The Twinkle Toes Pedicure Kit. Everything your little lady needs for pedicure from decorated flip flops to toe separator and small bottle of polish. And when the pedicure is complete, she can finish off her look with an adorable flower clip.
To make your own pedicure kit, start by decorating purchased flip flops. Create a mesh bag by cutting and sewing together two netting rectangles. Add the sandals, polish, and separator to the bag. Tie the bag shut with coordinating ribbon. To make the flower clip, cut the stem off of an artificial daisy. (Mine came with the rhinestone added in the center, but you could easily do this on your own.) Stitch or glue an alligator clip to the back of the flower. Attach the flower clip to the top of the bag. Now you are set to give the perfect gift for the glamor girl.

Looking for something for the boys on your list? Why not make a car caddy? These fabric pouches are perfect for keeping busy bodies out of trouble when out and about. I love that they not only carry the cars, but they also provide an area to play with the cars. Here is one of my newly designed caddies.

You can find the tutorial for the original caddy here. For this version, I decided to make two pockets and attach them to the outside of the caddy. This left room inside to create two roads for play on the inside of the caddy. Be sure to check back later this week for other similar caddies that I have been busy designing.

I love creating and giving homemade especially during the Christmas season. Nothing beats being able to give a truly unique item given from the heart. I can't wait to see what everyone else is giving this year!

Foodie Friday: Pumpkin Spice Scones with Spiced Glaze

I know that we are quickly transitioning from fall to winter. One look outside is a quick reminder. However, I am not quite ready to say goodbye to one of my favorite fall friends, pumpkin spice. While gingerbread and peppermint are wonderful holiday flavors, they cannot replace the warm happiness that fills my soul (and tummy) when I bite into a pumpkin spice treat.
I took this recipe from The Brown Eyed Bakers website. She has a whole entire posting dedicated the deliciousness that is pumpkin spice. And while you are there, be sure to check out her Christmas cookie post.

Ingredients:

For the Scones:
2 cups all-purpose flour
7 Tablespoons granulated sugar
1 Tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon ground ginger
6 Tablespoons cold butter
½ cup canned pumpkin
3 Tablespoons half-and-half
1 large egg
For the Powdered Sugar Glaze:
1 cup plus 1 Tablespoon powdered sugar
2 Tabelspoons milk
For the Spiced Glaze:
1 cup plus 3 Tablespoons powdered sugar
2 Tablespoons milk
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 pinch ground ginger
1 pinch ground cloves
Directions:                                                                                                                                                 1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
2. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger in a large bowl. Use a fork to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until mixture is crumbly and no chunks of butter are obvious; set aside.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the pumpkin, half-and-half and egg. Fold wet ingredients into dry ingredients, and form the dough into a ball. Pat out dough onto a lightly floured surface and form it into a 1-inch thick rectangle about 3 times as long as wide. Use a large knife or a pizza cutter to slice the dough twice through the width, making three equal portions. Cut each of the portions in an X pattern (four pieces) so you end up with 12 triangular slices of dough. Place on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 14-16 minutes, or until light brown. Place on wire rack to cool.

4. To make the powdered sugar glaze, mix the powdered sugar and milk together until smooth. When scones are cool, use a brush to spread plain glaze over the top of each scone.
5. To make the spiced glaze, while the powdered sugar glaze is firming, combine all of the ingredients for the spiced glaze. Drizzle over each scone and allow the icing to dry before serving (about an hour).

Thankful for Thanksgiving

The Cherry family loaded up the minivan and hit the road last Wednesday to join the throngs of Americans traveling for Thanksgiving. Thankfully we didn't hit the ditch like many of our fellow drivers. We made it to Mr. Cherry's home town just in time to head to the Wednesday night Thanksgiving service at his family's church. I personally thought this would be a great idea. That way we could have an easy Thursday morning before heading to the annual Thanksgiving festivities at Mr. Cherry's grandma's. Little Peachy, on the other hand, thought that five and a half hours of sitting still was enough and wiggled her complaints throughout the service.
Thursday brought our usual Thanksgiving fun spent with much of Mr. Cherry's extended family. I even snuck some of my family in this year in the form of my younger sister. When we all were sufficiently stuffed, we tried something new this year and had a baby shower for one of the cousin's wives. While I enjoyed the games, Mr. Cherry tried to wrestle Peachy into a nap. After an hour of Peachy wrestling and crying, it was determined that no nap would be had that day. We enjoyed the leftovers from lunch and headed home to put a very tired little girl to bed.
Last year my sister-in-laws and I started a new tradition of Black Friday shopping. As my father-in-law put it, we are not professional shoppers rather recreational. We do not set alarms. We do make sure the babies are all fed. And then when we are all set we hit the road. The beauty of this plan is no waiting in long lines and no sleep deprivation. The downfall is that we don't get in on the big bargains. We are all fine with this. After several successful stops and one unsuccessful attempt to find parking at the mall, we enjoyed a lunch at Panera and headed home with our loot.

My youngest sister-in-law is the lucky owner of a beauty of a Holiday sweater. And we were lucky enough to be graced with its presence as we hunted for presents. When one is blessed with such a sweater, pictures must be taken. We all got our chance in the Christmas section at Target.

And here are the three cutie patooties in the turkey shirts that I made.
My 2 month old nephew. Isn't he precious? And what a good baby, too!!
This is my roommate from college's 2 year old.  Love the smile and the hair!
And our Little Peachy. I am going to have to take lessons on how to get a picture of a busy 18 month old!
