Baby Boy Gifts

Remember that Harley baby shower I wrote about a few weeks back? Well, here is the fun gift that I made for little Owen.

2 bibs, 2 burp cloths, monthly onesie picture kit, 4 pee pee tee pees, and 1 pacifier holder. I  made it all from 4 different 1/3 cut fabrics, and 1 yard of flannel with various other items.

I made the bibs using this great tutorial and pattern from Lots of Pink Here. I used flannel for the backing and a fusible batting for the middle layer. Instead of adding velcro, I used a loop of elastic cord and a button. The center is embellished with ric rac.

For the monthly onesie picture kit, I packaged up 4 different sized plain onesies, 12 month stickers that I designed on Publisher and printed on sticker paper, and a sticker holder with an elastic loop and button closure.

The pacifier clip is made using a mitten clip on one end of a strip of fabric and an elastic loop on the other end. The burp cloths are just a rectangle of fabric with flannel backing. I made them into "cupcakes" using a printable I purchased at KdBuggie Boutique on Etsy. I followed the tutorial on Saturday Mornings for the PeePee TeePees.

I wrapped it all up in a box, which of course I didn't take a picture of, but you can see it on the left side of the picture above. 

I think I will be making lots of these fun baby kits as baby presents. They are fun and easy to put together and I can't think of a new mom who wouldn't appreciate some homemade baby goods.

DIY Baby Playmat

Here it is, my newest creation. (Not the baby, she's been around for 7 weeks, the playmat.)

 Cream "needed" a playmat and I decided to try my hand at making my own. One hula hoop, several yards of fabric, batting, 9 buttons, and a yard of elastic later, she has her playmat. I didn't take pictures as I made it, so no real tutorial here, but I will give you a run down of how  I created it. I started by cutting a hula hoop in half with a hack saw. (Little did I know that a wave hula hoop means that it is filled with water. Good thing I did my sawing in the garage.) I then sewed fabric tubes to cover each hula hoop arch. As I sewed I inserted loops of elastic that could be used to hang toys off the arches.

It took me a while to figure out how I would attach the arches to the mat, I ended up using two half circles of fabric sewn together with button holes on each corner. So, I made a sandwich with the batting, backing, and top fabric and inserted the half circles onto each corner. Then I sewed two buttons onto each end of each arch.

In order to secure the arches when they are up, I sewed an elastic loop and button on one arch. I simply wrap the elastic around both arches and secure it with the loop.

While this playmat doesn't come with all of the bells and whistles that the store bought ones do, it should do the trick for the few months that Cream will make use of it.

Baby Week Day Four

Are you ready for some more cuddly goodness? After having Peachy, we learned the importance of a good swaddle. We also learned that I am not very good at using the traditional receiving blanket as a swaddling device. So we invested in a Miracle Blanket. And let me tell you, it was a miracle! I decided with this baby that I would try to make my own swaddling blankets. I searched the internet and saved several tutorials to Pinterest. I ended up deciding to use the original Prudent Baby DIY Swaddle Blanket Pattern. (Note, they also have a revised version here.)
I dipped into my fabric stash and came out with these two cuties.

And while I don't know if Cream will be a swaddle baby and I don't know how well this particular swaddler works, I do know that they are cute!

Baby Week Day Three

Day one brought us clothes, day two brought us a warm and cuddly blanket, what is in store for day three? How about something for mommy? When I had Peachy I used a promotional code to get a commercial nursing cover. And while it did the trick, I knew I could do better. I found my tutorial at Sew Much Ado and first made it for a friend a few months ago. (You can see that one here.)
This cover is the perfect size and I love how it turned out. It will be tucked into the diaper bag for those occasions that a discreet nursing is in order.

Baby Week Day Two

Yesterday I showed you what Baby Cream will be rocking on the way home from the hospital and today I will be sharing an adorable receiving blanket that Baby Cream can use in the hospital, on the way home, and many times once home. I have made this blanket several times for friends and loved the results. (You can see those blankets here.) So I just knew that I would have to make one for our baby as well. I used a tutorial provided by Elisabeth at Growing Your Home.
And here is Little Cream's blanket.

I used a cotton print for the front and a cotton flannel for the back. The jumbo ric-rac perfectly finishes the blanket off.

The size is perfect for wrapping baby up, covering a car seat, or spreading out on the ground or floor.

And the flannel backing adds just enough weight to keep it warm and from blowing away on a gusty day.

Perfect for baby cuddles!

Tutorial Tuesday: Hip Mama Diaper Bag Pt. 2

Four months ago I posted pictures of the Hip Mama Diaper Bag that I had made for myself following this tutorial. When my sister-in-law saw it, she said that it was just what she was looking for in a diaper bag. This, my friends, was music to my ears. Now I would get to make the diaper bag again AND I now knew what I would give my sister-in-law as a baby gift. Perfect. After discussing fabric selections, I ordered some light-weight upholstery fabric from Fabric.com and got to work. (I also ordered coordinating cotton and flannel for a few accessories.) I was so happy with the final results, and I think my sister-in-law was as well.

Tutorial Tuesday: Toddler Leg Warmers

Remember Peachy's tie-dye birthday leg warmers?

I do! I also remember that I promised you a tutorial on how I made them.

Here is the tutorial I shared on Sumo's blog last Friday.

Toddler Leg Warmer Tutorial (AKA The Easiest Tutorial You Will Ever Find!)

1. Purchase knee high socks. (They have a great selection at Target for $2/pair in the women's sock section. The pair I am using today came in a three pair set from Wal-Mart in the girls' department.)

2. Measure the length of your child's leg.

3. Cut your sock the length of your child's leg. (Measure from the cuff of the sock down. You will be cutting off some of the leg and the foot of the sock.)

4. Set your sewing machine to a small zig-zag. Stitch around the sock where you made your cut. As you stitch, pull the sock. (This creates the ruffle edge. If you are having trouble getting the sock to ruffle, try pulling a bit harder.)

5. Repeat with the other sock and you're done.

Now Peachy is all set for a chilly Fourth of July! (It could happen around here!)
